Doug began his square dance calling career more than 50 years ago by winning a scholarship to a callers' school in New England, before he'd even finished learning how to square dance! He was originally taught by Earl Johnston, Vaughn Parrish, Al Brundage and Jim Mayo, and received advanced caller training from Frank Lane, Bob Fisk and Earl Johnston in Colorado.

At various times he has enjoyed calling for clubs in the San Francisco Bay Area on a weekly basis, including Doug's Dancers, Beaus and Bows, Woodstackers, Levis and Laces, Pairs and Spares and Peninsula Squares. In 1994, he even had the honor of being selected by the San Francisco Mayor's office to take two squares of dancers to Seoul, South Korea, for their Sister Cities Music and Dance Festival. After moving to Santa Rosa in 2001, he taught beginner classes and square danced with local clubs. Now that he is retired from real estate appraising, he can enjoy his love of calling and teaching at One Night Party events.

Doug's specialty is One Night Parties (aka easy-level parties for non-square dancers) for large or small groups at events like birthday or anniversary parties, wedding receptions, school and church fundraisers, fraternity/sorority parties, corporate gatherings and fraternal organization and retirement community events.  While Doug sometimes travels long distances (even overseas!) to lead these parties, he usually works around the northern and western sides of the Bay Area:  Sonoma, Napa, Marin, San Francisco and San Mateo counties.

Most parties are focused on square dancing and fun mixers, both of which are Doug's areas of expertise, and he has the ability to generate great enthusiasm. Doug's Sinatra-like voice can bring the evening to a close with relaxing dance tunes from the era of Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin, so everyone enjoys some soothing slow dancing after an evening of lively action. He has received numerous compliments on his song selection and singing from the heart.

In addition to One Night Parties, Doug calls modern club-level squares from beginner level up to A2 (Advanced), and cues round dances up to Phase III including two step, waltz, rumba, cha-cha and foxtrot rhythms. He is available for fill-ins around the Bay Area.
